1. I saw them the other day and they blew my mind sideways. Best act I saw at SXSW hands down.

Food Porn: Beet & Feta Tart

Long time, no porn, right? This evening, Ms. Art and I made a beet & feta tart. It was pretty delicious, and I would suggest you give it a shot. Also of note: How freakishly unnatural is a beet's color? It kind of reminds me of those terrifying "crunchy flamin' hot" Cheetos, except, you know, beets come out of the ground and are actually good for you. Anyway, where were we? I should probably let Ms. Art take it from here...

...Oh, hi. Ms. Art here. He's right, it was more like beet & feta pie, because we don't own a tart pan. Tarts and pies are like identical twins that looked absurdly alike as kids but then once they hit puberty, it turned out one was much prettier than the other and also good at cheerleading. Sorry, pie. Everything evens out once you're in college, promise.

We also don't own pie weights. My birthday's in July, y'all. Dried beans work fine, and anyway dried chickpea pie is delicious. A little on the crunchy side, and you'll want to drink lots of water.

So anyway, beet & feta pie! This is a recipe from Orangette; hers is prettier. Okay, tarts, we get it.

I didn't make too many changes; I used Martha's pastry recipe, as recommended, but subbed in white whole wheat flour, which is lighter in flavor and texture than regular whole wheat flour and just as nutritious. I also used an extra beet & added in the greens, too.

Beet & Feta Tart. Pie. Whatever.

1 half-recipe Martha Stewart’s pâte brisée without sugar
3 medium-sized red beets
3 medium-sized beets' worth of beet greens, chopped
1/4 cup water
2 large eggs
¾ cup skim milk
5 oz feta, crumbled
Salt & cracked black pepper

Preheat oven to 400. Wash your beets and wrap them in a cozy foil packet. Roast for 45-60 minutes, until very tender. Allow to cool, then rub off the peels and slice the beets into 1/4" thick slices.

Meanwhile, prepare your pie crust. Refrigerate until the beets are almost done roasting, then roll out and arrange in your pie plate (or tart pan, should you be so well-equipped as all that). Line with foil and add your pie weights or dried beans; bake at 375 for 15 minutes.

Also meanwhile, heat a saute pan over medium heat, with a little oil, if you like. Add your beet greens and 1/4 cup water. Stir until wilted, but still bright green. Put aside.

And ALSO meanwhile (beets take a long time to roast, you can really get a lot done), whisk together your eggs, milk, feta, salt, and pepper.

Time to assemble! Take your blind-baked crust (you can take the chickpeas out now) and spread the cooked greens on the bottom. Layer in the sliced beets; Orangette recommends keeping it to one layer, but my pie version had about three. Pour the egg mixture over top.

Bake at 350 for 45 minutes or so, until the filling is set. Allow to rest for ten minutes, then slice & serve.

Food Porn: Pumpkin, Polenta, & Kale Casserole.

Hey kids, it's me, Ms. Art. You know what Austin is thinking he hates as he reads this? The Oxford comma in the title. But guess what? It's MY turn. And I LOVE an Oxford comma.

I also completely loved the Moosewood recipe we made & devoured tonight. It's from their latest cookbook, which I'm pretty excited about as I've never attempted a Moosewood recipe that was anything but delectable. Unsurprisingly, this one didn't disappoint.

That deliciousness you see collected in the grooves of the pumpkin topping is white cheddar. Yes, please.

Not only is there pumpkin and white cheddar, there's polenta with thyme & sundried tomatoes. And that layer has white cheddar too, actually. Plus, garlicky kale. Not sure if I mentioned it, but YES, PLEASE.

Also worth mentioning: this paired really, really well with the 2008 Sweetwater Festive Ale we had in our glasses.

Ingredients:
Polenta Layer:
2 1/3 cups water (use the water you steamed the squash in - we're getting to that)
2/3 cup fine-ground yellow cornmeal
2 sundried tomatoes, chopped
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp dried thyme
1/2 cup grated sharp cheddar
Greens Layer:
2 tbsp olive oil
4 garlic cloves, pressed
12 cups stemmed & chopped kale (or whatever - collards, swiss chard, etc.)
1/2 cup water
1/4 tsp salt
Squash Layer:
3 cups pureed winter squash (ours was a pie pumpkin that had been sitting on the porch since Halloween, no joke. Austin was horrified)
1 large egg, beaten
1/4 tsp salt
Plenty of ground black pepper
2/3 cup grated sharp cheddar

Get on with it, then:
1. Start your squash (peeled & cubed) steaming, however you like to steam. We have an electric vegetable steamer, for some reason, although I like that it doubles as a rice cooker - at any rate, an insert in a pot would be much simpler. Remember to save your pumpkiny water for the polenta. When it's done, 20 minutes or so later, mash it somehow. I used an immersion blender, which is a way better kitchen appliance than an electric vegetable steamer. So handy.
2. That polenta: bring your 2 1/3 cup pumpkiny water to a boil and gradually whisk in the cornmeal. Add the sundried tomatoes, salt, and thyme, and cook on low heat, stirring often, for about ten minutes. Stir in the cheese, spread in a 9x13" dish, and leave it be. Oh, and preheat your oven to 350.
3. Them greens: heat the oil in a big pot and add the garlic. Stir it around for just a second, then add the greens, water, and salt. Cover and cook for ten minutes, stirring every so often. Distribute over the polenta.
4. And the squash: stir together the squash, egg, salt, pepper, and half of the cheese. Spread it over the greens and sprinkle the rest of the cheese on top.
5. Bake it for longer than you'd think: cover the pan and stick it in the oven for 25 minutes, then uncover it and let it carry on for another 15. Then - and this part sucks, I know - let it rest for five minutes before serving.

Oh, hello, blog. How were your holidays? That's good. Mine and Ms. Art's were pretty grand; thank you for asking. We enjoyed wildlife, bikes and beaches in Sanibel Island, Florida and old friends, delicious food and Jens Lekman in Chicago. Not too shabby. Then, all of a sudden, 2010 showed up and Food Porn was back like the filthy mistress she is.

Tonight, we made mango dal...

...and then I saved this post as a draft and took 10 days to get back to it. Sheesh. So! Real quick and dirtylike, let's do a couple photos and the recipe, shall we? It's good, good stuff.

Recipe (boldfacedly copy/pasted from Eating Well):

INGREDIENTS
1 cup yellow lentils
4 cups water
1 teaspoon salt, divided
1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
1 tablespoon canola oil
1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 medium onion, chopped
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
2 mangoes, peeled and diced
1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro

PREPARATION
Place lentils in a colander and rinse until the water runs clear. Combine lentils, 4 cups water, 1/2 teaspoon salt and turmeric in a large saucepan. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer, partially cover and cook, stirring occasionally, for 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and cook until fragrant and starting to brown, about 30 seconds. Add onion; cook, stirring, until soft and beginning to brown, 4 to 6 minutes. Add garlic, ginger, coriander, cayenne and the remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt and cook, stirring, for 1 minute more.

Stir the garlic mixture and mangoes into the lentils. Return to a simmer; cook, stirring occasionally, until the lentils are falling apart, 10 to 15 minutes more. Stir in cilantro.

Food Porn: Peanut Stir-Fry

For this week's edition of Food Porn, we brought back an old favorite. The recipe for tonight's peanut stir-fry first originated way back when Ms. Art was still an omnivore (she tells me it once included chicken), but has since become a staple of our dinner repertoire. In fact, we find it's a pretty consistent crowd pleaser, a meal we're happy to introduce to family and friends on the regular. Tonight's rendition, though lacking broccoli, was still excellent. In an effort to make this post more useful for you, dear reader, I asked the lady to type up a recipe. Ms. Art, take it away...

Ingredients:
One package of tofu, drained, wrapped in a tea towel, and pressed, then cut into one-inch cubes. I like silken because even though it's kind of fall-aparty, it cooks up crispy on the outside and custardy on the inside. Mmm. I'm told meat-eating types like the texture of extra-firm.

Whatever veggies you like, probably about six cups of them, chopped. This time, we used bok choy, a few radishes and their greens, and some spring onions, because that's what appeared in our CSA share this week. Some sort of onion is crucial. Broccoli is awesome because it soaks up the sauce in an exceptionally delicious way.

Three cloves of garlic, minced

Chunk of ginger root, minced. 2-3 tablespoons' worth.

Olive oil

Salt & pepper

Sauce:
1/4 cup natural peanut butter - we like Trader Joe's Organic Creamy, salted, because it's positively amazing.

1/4 cup soy sauce

1 tablespoon rice vinegar

1/2 teaspoon Sriracha sauce

Water

Preparation:
Heat a tablespoon of olive oil in a non-stick frying pan - really, use non-stick, you'll be glad you did. Add your tofu in a single layer, and season with salt & pepper. Cook for about 5 minutes, then turn, until all sides are browned.

Meanwhile, heat another tablespoon or so of olive oil in a wok or similar vessel. Add your veggies according to how long they take to cook - tonight, we did bok choy stems, radishes, white parts of the onions, garlic, and ginger to start, then added the greens once those began to soften.

Stir together sauce ingredients and add water to make a nice saucy consistency. Once your veggies are done, add the tofu, green bits of the onions, and sauce to the pan and stir together. Serve over brown basmati rice.

Food Porn: Kale and Spaghetti Squash Lasagna

Tonight, Ms. Art and I coined a new term. "Squail" is what happens when you force kale and spaghetti squash into unholy-yet-utterly-appetizing culinary union. We put the two together this evening (along with onions, garlic, whole wheat lasagna noodles, ricotta, mozzarella, marinara sauce, etc.) in the form of a hefty lasagna, and were more than satisfied with the results. There wasn't much of a recipe to speak of, but if you're interested, I'd be more than happy to detail the process for you. If not, please enjoy the photos.

Food Porn: Root Vegetable Gratin

Most every Sunday evening, Ms. Art and I make dinner together. It's one of the small ways we attempt to bring some sanity to a pair of very busy lives. This, then, was the latest of said dinners. The dish is called root vegetable gratin. It was the first time we'd ever had it, and we both found it pretty delicious. (The pictures get even more delicious-looking/huge if you click on them.) We served it with ~~arugula salad~~ mizuna and butter lettuce salad. (Brain fart! We put arugula in the gratin.)

Today, I ventured out into the wilds Walnut Grove, Ga. with Ms. Art, the lovely Rachel W. and graphic-art whiz Alvin. Our destination was the charming Whippoorwill Hollow Farm, home to, amongst other things, giant motherfucking okra and a yearly Slow Food Atlanta/Georgia Organics benefit called Field of Greens. This year, over 50 vendors, restaurants and chefs participated, which means we were eating and taking pictures all afternoon. It was wonderful. One of the chefs in attendance, that fella pictured above, was Kevin Gillespie, he of Woodfire Grill/Top Chef fame. He won the Three-Not-So-Little-Pigs cooking contest. He totally earned it too. Yum.

In memory of Sweet Pea

Last night I found out I lost a friend. Jason Brightfield, who I lived with for the better part of four years of college, passed away this week. Sweet Pea, as he was nicknamed freshman year, had been suffering from cancer for a few years, and those of us who knew him didn't think the disease had much of a chance. After all, Jason was the most organized, put-together, in shape, dedicated guy I've ever known. He fought off cancer a few times, but in the end, the disease won.

If he can die so young, what does that say about the rest of us? It's beyond weird to think that he wrote a blog post just eight days ago, one that indicated things were down but certainly not out. "Surreal" does not begin to describe how sudden this happened, but at the very least, he's not in pain anymore. Let his passing be a reminder to all of us just how mortal we are. Live every day, people.

My words can't sum up his life justly, so I'd like to link to some that do a much better job. Allison wrote a lovely blog post in the wee hours of this morning, and it includes a line that is so spot on about Jason that it made me laugh out loud: "He had this captivating personality, hysterical observations and very specific time lines for the completion of tasks." Additionally, Jason wrote a hilarious, inspiring and honest letter to cancer in late July. Please read it.

You'll be missed, Jason.

All right, so I don't necessarily agree with that sentiment, but I do see where he's coming from. When I first started my little foray into the blogosphere, on June 11, 2005, my tagline at the top of the page read, "This is what happens when I have time on my hands." When I began writing here, that was certainly the case. I had just started as an intern at Paste magazine, and when I wasn't busy trying to find some kind of part time work or exploring the city (I didn't do much of either at first, honestly), I did indeed have plenty time to sit around, stealing Internet from neighbors and typing about whatever. I did, and it was fun.

Now, I'm the web editor for the magazine that brought me to Atlanta in the first place, and part of my job is overseeing a whole set of blogs at that publication. Additionally, I manage a record store and run its blog. I'm also the editorial assistant and a freelance contributor to another magazine while doing writing for at least a couple others. All this, combined with some sort of an attempt at a social life, and you can see where this leaves me. Not that I'm complaining. Busy is better than bored, as I like to say.

Furthermore, it's gotten to the point where I feel like I'm half-assing What We All Want. Used to be, back in the day, I'd bang out lengthy posts like this on a regular basis. Anymore, I feel like I can only make time for a nice image, a sentence or two, then a link. Wham, bam, thank you ma'am. That's not fair for those of you reading. Sure, there are posts where I probably could've devoted more time, but sometimes I'm just not into it, you know? Even this post was a long time coming, because I wasn't ready to say what I needed to say. Persistent commenters and an email from a friend pushed me to say something/anything. Basically, this blog needs some time off. I'm not saying it's the end (OK, I did say that in the title, but I was just being dramatic and referencing The Doors), but the posts will likely be a lot less frequent in the future. And I won't have to feel guilty about it like I do now. So there.

Don't think I won't miss the daily updates, though. Even just going through old posts now, I get a funny feeling. It's like I'm losing a good friend or a lover, even though the blog will be right here and I can utilize it whenever I feel like it. But it's true...we've had some good times. And we'll have more. Honestly, I'm still impressed with how easy it is to find WWAW on Google and on other blogs. Or how random people still leave comments from time to time. Or how I actually made some money off of writing about the most ridiculous stuff on here.

I will also miss the shout-outs to my myriad real life friends who also happen to have some sort of web presence. Hell, anymore I rarely even keep up with those, let alone my own blog. But I shall make a concerted effort. And keeping WWAW around, if only for the links, will be useful.

Although I didn't really intend for this to be sappy, I feel like it's sliding in that direction, so I shall cut it off. In conclusion, this blog will still exist, and I will post to it from time to time. Feel free to check in at your leisure. For now, I'd really appreciate if anyone who reads this left a comment of some sort. Doesn't matter what you say, just holler below. Thank you much. Around these parts, we like to highlight these people from time to time. Today's entry comes via the Grand Wee One, and is called indexed. In the words of the creator herself, here's what occurs at the blog several times a week:

Tom Morello flexes ego, calls for action

Recently, Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello spoke with MTV about his band's upcoming Coachella reunion. Pretty incredible stuff that he said, including this quote:

“Is it coincidence that in the seven years that Rage Against the Machine has been away that the country has slid into right-wing purgatory? I think not. It occurred to all of us that the times were right to see if we can knock the Bush administration out in one fell swoop, and we hope to do that job well. This administration has done enough damage that it may take generations to undo. This is an administration that believes it’s beyond the laws of the land, which is fine for emperors, but not so great for presidents. One thing this president isn’t above is the laws of physics, and there is no action without reaction. And we’re part of that reaction.”

Perhaps this "reaction" will involve the dismantling of Audioslave? One can only hope.

Now, on one hand, Morello's comments are egotistical and patently ridiculous. Obviously, RATM's disappearance didn't allow the country to become more conservative. And if Morello and Co. really wanted to thwart the administration, it would've made much more sense to attempt such a mission before the second term. On the other hand, it's precisely this particular kind of dramatic crazypants that made RATM so awesome while the band existed. Color us excited for the Coachella performance. Here's hoping they actually play some music and don't simply rant onstage for upwards of an hour.

Did you know that certain musical artists can push you towards the act of sexual love with someone of your own gender? It's true! Well, at least according to a website that a certain new 21-year-old showed us whilst in the Illinois. Crooks and Liars first reported the site, and we've since seen it pop up elsewhere, but, holy carp, this is ridiculous! Some highlights:

* Danielson makes the "safe" list, but Sufjan is on the "gay" one. Huh?

* Ted Nugent, despite his ultra-conservative ways, makes the list. The reasoning? He sometimes wears a loincloth.

* Elton John makes two appearances on the list, the second one noting that he's "really gay."

Surely, this is a joke. If it's serious, it's simply way too sad. Read more:
